MLIS candidate and longtime technology quality leader eventually transitioning into librarianship, with a focus on public libraries, local history, digital collections, and community access. I bring more than 20 years of experience organizing complex information, improving user experiences, leading cross-functional projects, and making digital systems more reliable and accessible. Through my local history websites and portfolio work at megsmils.com, I have developed hands-on experience researching, digitizing, organizing, and sharing community history in a public-facing format. I hope to bring this combination of technical skill, historical research, and community-centered service to a library, archive, museum, or local history organization. After paying $10,000 for the home, Davis transferred it to her biracial daughter Irene Dearing and her husband, Sidney Dearing, a Black man whose parents had been enslaved in Texas. Racial covenants meant that the Dearings needed a white proxy to purchase the property. Almost immediately after moving in, they became the target of harassment by their neighbors and the nascent local government. The Piedmont police chief — a member of the Ku Klux Klan — had no interest in protecting the Dearings.
